🌦️ Predicting the Weather: a big leap#
Google DeepMind introduced GenCast, a generative AI model capable of predicting the weather with surprising accuracy.
The most interesting part is how it combines traditional physical models with deep learning, producing forecasts that are faster and competitive with classical methods.
🔍 Key points
- 🤖 Generative AI applied to meteorology
- ⚡ Faster predictions than traditional numerical models
- 🌍 Better performance on extreme events, where every minute counts
- 🧠 Trained on decades of real climate data
🧩 In short#
Imagine the weather is a giant puzzle.
Traditional methods try to solve it by computing every piece with very complex physical equations.
AI, instead, learns patterns from thousands of examples and can “predict” how the pieces will fit without recalculating everything from scratch.
Result: faster forecasts and, in many cases, equal or better accuracy.
Why it matters#
In industry we have hundreds or thousands of time series with thousands or millions of independent variables.
Now the challenge is to apply these technologies to industrial processes.
